Mindful Walking & Crows of Reed

Instructor: Gary Granger

Classes will combine intentional movement practices outdoors with an introductory study of the American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) on Reed’s campus. Each two-hour class will involve group time with classmates and the instructor, walking, and observing crows (and other birds). Students will also make solo excursions on campus in order to practice the techniques in the class and review their experiences with the instructor one-on-one or in a group. A focus for each class will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the class. Participants will meet in the south facing hallway of the Sports Center near the Outdoor center for the first class to receive equipment, and to be given instructions on where subsequent classes will begin. The instructor will briefly introduce the day’s focus before setting out on foot for the majority of the class period. An emphasis will be placed on understanding how intention when moving impacts the experience of being in a space and one’s awareness, along with how movement and stillness impact birds and their habitats. Walking between locations will emphasize a focus on the act of walking and moving through space, while deemphasizing the arrival at a destination. Field observation and recording skills will be explored. Participants will learn how to use standard binoculars effectively in the field.
