youth outreach pictureSMART: Start Making a Reader Today

SMART’s vision is an Oregon in which every child can read and is empowered to succeed. We strive to inspire a love of reading in Oregon’s children so that they will go on to become lifelong readers and lifelong learners. To transform this vision into reality, SMART engages community volunteers to read one-on-one with PreK through third-grade children for one hour per week throughout the school year. SMART provides literacy support to students in more than 250 schools statewide (over 90 schools in the Portland Metro area). SMART is fun and further encourages children to read outside the classroom by giving students new books each month to take home and keep.

Mt. Scott Learning Center

Our two fully accredited learning centers are specially designed for middle school and high school students who benefit from a non-traditional learning environment. We provide a safe, nurturing, challenging environment in which most of our students discover for the first time what it means to succeed. Volunteers can find opportunities here, or contact director Tom DeJardin directly via email or phone at 503.771.8880. They are located at 6148 S.E. Holgate, a quick bus or bike ride from Reed.

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is a scientific, educational, and cultural resource center dedicated to improving the public's understanding of science and technology. OMSI puts the "wow" in science for the kid in each of us! Please check out their website for a list of current openings for volunteers.
