Minors - Effective Fall 2019

CHINESE

A Minor in Chinese

The goal of the Chinese minor is to achieve proficiency in the Chinese language and a strong understanding of literary and cultural studies. Regardless of prior proficiency, all students must complete four units of Chinese language and/or literature courses, at most one in translation.

Requirements for the Minor:

  1. Two units of 300-level Chinese literature courses, at least one must be in the original language (not in translation).
  2. Depending on language proficiency, additional courses or substitutions (see chart below).

CLASSICS

A Minor in Greek, Latin, or Greek and Latin

The goal of the Classics minors is to ensure work in Greek or Latin language at the advanced level, and to provide various options to students with different levels of preparation that reflect achievement of that standard.

Requirements for the Greek Minor:

  • Five units from Greek 110, 210, 311, and 312. At least one unit must be from Greek 311 or 312.

Requirements for the Latin Minor:

  • Five units from Latin 110, 210, 311, and 312. At least one unit must be from Latin 311 or 312.

Requirements for the Greek and Latin Minor:

  1. Six units from Greek 110, 210, 311, 312, Latin 110, 210, 311, and 312. At least two of these units must be from Greek 311 and 312 or Latin 311 and 312.
  2. At least two units must be in each language.

 

ENGLISH

A Minor in English

The goal of the English minor is to ensure a strong understanding of literary study, including work at the advanced level. Flexibility in defining the fifth unit allows students to pursue an interest in a topic taught at the 200- or 300-level, or in Creative Writing.

Requirements for the Minor:

  • Five units of English and/or Creative Writing courses, which must include two units of 200-level English courses and two units of 300-level English courses.
    1. Two units of 200-level English courses, two units of 300-level English courses, and one unit of Creative Writing; or
    2. Three units of 200-level English courses and two units of 300-level English courses; or
    3. Two units of 200-level English courses and three units of 300-level English courses.

FRENCH

A Minor in French

The goal of the French minor is to achieve proficiency in the French language and a strong understanding of literary and cultural studies. In addition to three courses in French (not in translation) at the 300 level, French minors will need to demonstrate language proficiency by completion of French 210 or French 320.

Requirements for the Minor:

  1. Three units of 300-level French literature courses not in translation.
  2. Depending on language proficiency, additional courses or substitutions (see chart below).

RUSSIAN

A Minor in Russian

The goal of the Russian minor is to ensure a high intermediate level of Russian language proficiency together with substantial study of Russian literature and culture. All students must complete four units of Russian courses above the introductory level, and at least one of these must be a literature/culture course requiring the original language.

Requirements for the Minor:

  1. Four units of 200-, 300-, or 400-level Russian courses.
  2. At least one unit must be in a Russian literature or culture course not in translation, taken at Reed College.
  3. Students may transfer credits from equivalent college-level courses taken elsewhere (as from a study abroad program).
  4. Depending on language proficiency, additional courses or substitutions (see chart below).
