Replacement Diploma
The only copy of a student's diploma is the one that was issued upon graduation. The Office of the Registrar does not keep a copy. For a replacement diploma to be issued, the original diploma must have been irretrievably lost or destroyed (if only damaged, the original must be returned to Reed).
The attendance and graduation of the person in question will be verified by the Registrar’s Office.
The fee for a replacement diploma is $50. The diploma will be issued only in the name under which the student attended Reed (In the case of an official name change, valid legal documentation must be produced, and the official transcript will indicate the new name).
Prior to collection or mailing of the document, originals or notarized copies of one of the following must be produced for identification:
- Current Driver's License
- Passport
- Birth Certificate
The replacement diploma may not be exactly identical to the original. Please allow four to six weeks for the processing of duplicate diploma requests.
Please send all required information and a signed letter requesting the replacement diploma by email to registrar@reed.edu or by mail to the address below:

Enrollment/GPA Verification
The Registrar's Office at Reed College is able to provide the following types of verification:
Enrollment Status: The Registrar's Office can verify enrollment status and dates of attendance at Reed College. This is considered directory information and public, unless the student specifically requests otherwise. Verifications are used for myriad purposes, including but not limited to insurance coverage, internship and scholarship applications, visa applications for study abroad programs, etc.
Loan Deferments: Reed also verifies enrollment status for purposes related to loan deferments. Generally the loan servicing agency provides specific forms that the student must request. The student can send or bring the form to Eliot 315 to request it be filled out and sent to the loan servicing agency.
GPA: Reed is able to verify a grade point average when a student makes the request. If parents wish to request such information, the student and parents must sign the Student Academic Information Release form and file it with the Registrar's office. All requests for GPA information must be made in writing with the signature of the student (or parents). If the office does not have record of the student's consent to release academic information, the college cannot and will not release such information to parties other than the student. The Student Academic Information Release form can be found in the Registrar's Office, Eliot 311. For more information about how Reed calculates a student's GPA, click here.
If you need any of these sorts of things verified, or if you need verification regarding something not listed here, please feel free to contact the Registrar's Office by e-mail at registrar@reed.edu. You can also drop by the office in Eliot 315 during the office's normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m..
Apostille
Some countries require additional authentication* (sometimes called an Apostille) to verify the legitimacy of a transcript, diploma or other document. If your country requires an Apostille, this must be obtained from the Oregon Secretary of State. Please send the following to the Office of the Registrar at Reed:
- The document requiring an Apostille. If the document is:
- a transcript, send a completed Transcript Request Form. We will issue an official transcript to send to the Secretary of State.
- not a transcript (eg. a diploma), send a photocopy of the document itself.
- Completed Request for Authentication/Apostille Form from the Secretary of State
- Prepaid envelope addressed to the Oregon Secretary of State’s office. This could be a stamped envelope or a prepaid envelope such as those available from FedEx or USPS.
- Reed Information Verification Request Form
- Prepaid envelope addressed to you (or whomever should receive the Apostille from the Secretary of State)
These documents should be sent to:
The registrar’s office will certify that the photocopy is true and correct, and will use your first prepaid envelope to send the documents on to the Secretary of State, who will then create an Apostille and send it on to whomever you indicate in your Request Form using your second prepaid envelope. For more information or if you have questions, please refer to the Secretary of State’s Website, or contact the Reed Registrar via phone at 503-777-7793 or email at registrar@reed.edu.
*Please note that these instructions are for countries requiring official authorization from a state official. In many cases where a company, organization or other body requires that a document be authenticated, a notarized letter from the registrar’s office attesting to its authenticity is sufficient. Please contact Mark Fowler (fowlerm@reed.edu or 503-777-7793) to request such a letter.
