Alumni News

The alumni board invites nominations for the Babson Society Award. Named for Jean McCall Babson ’42, the annual award honors the generosity of alumni who have made exceptional contributions to the college through their volunteer efforts.

The Foster-Scholz Club is seeking nominations for its distinguished service award. This tradition, which was begun in 1975 and is designed to recognize a club member (in Portland or elsewhere) who has made major contributions to the community and/or the college, honors alumni who attended Reed 40 or more years ago (currently the classes of 1968 and earlier).

These awards are presented annually at the Foster-Scholz Club & Annual Recognition luncheon during reunions. The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2009. Submit nominations in writing to

Pizza Map

The fourth annual Reed Diaspora Pizza gatherings took place on June 16, bringing out alumni in 22 cities (almost twice as many as last year—see map) across the Western Hemisphere to eat, drink, and welcome new graduates to their areas. Some events were small, some were huge, but all participants said, “Let’s do it again next year!” Mark your calendars now for June 15, 2009. If you are interested in helping to plan this event in your city, please contact Ian Atlas ’91 or Loraine Shields ’74.

The tradition may have come from Oxford, but Reed’s own boar’s-head procession is still celebrated with accustomed ceremony at our annual holiday party. Please help us keep this beloved custom alive by joining the Boar’s Head Ensemble Singers on Saturday, December 13. For more information, contact or 503/777-7589.
