The Quest for the Future

I have taken the liberty of usurping the editor’s letter in this edition of Reed to announce officially the launch of the Reed College Centennial Campaign.

A handful of visionaries founded Reed just 100 years ago. They embodied in their creation radical ideals—a devotion to the pure spirit of inquiry, genuine intellectual community, and the principle of honor. Those ideals still animate the college today, thanks to the sacrifices and dedication of four generations of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends.

But as John Sheehy ’82 writes in our cover story, How the Humanities Saved Reed, the college’s early promise was almost extinguished by a series of financial crises—crises that were staved off thanks to the largess of Portland’s business establishment.

As we turn our gaze to the next 100 years, we are fortunate to have a resource that did not exist back then—a generation of alumni who understand the college’s special mission and its transformative power.

As Reed’s centennial beckons, our generation has occasion to reflect on what it can do to preserve that legacy and bequeath it to future generations. In that spirit, I invite you to participate in the Centennial Campaign. As you will see in the following pages, the campaign gives everyone who loves Reed an opportunity to invest in the qualities that have made it the very epitome of liberal educational practice and ideals. Every aspect of the campaign—from endowed scholarships to support of teaching and research to funding for new facilities—is designed to serve and strengthen the central historic mission of the college. And through that support, every aspect of the campaign is designed to keep alive the ideals that have become synonymous with Reed College.

I hope you will join us.
