Board Elects New Trustees

M. Jane Buchan

M. Jane Buchan is CEO and managing director of Pacific Alternative Asset Management Company, which specializes in constructing diversified portfolios of hedge funds for large institutional investors. Jane has been working on hedge funds since 1987, previously serving as portfolio manager for Collins Associates and as an analyst at J.P. Morgan Investment Management. Jane earned her B.A. in economics from Yale University in 1986, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in business economics from Harvard University. She took classes at Reed three days a week in what would have been her senior year at Wilson High school.

Jane serves on the board of directors for Torchmark Corporation, and on the advisory boards for Peking University and the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association. She is a member of 100 Women in Hedge Funds, a non-profit organization that provides education and mentoring opportunities for women and raises money for designated causes including breast cancer research. Jane’s husband, Jim Driscoll, is an investment manager and serves on the board of directors and campaign leadership committee of the Orange County Performing Arts Center. Jane and Jim live in Corona Del Mar, California.

John P. Sheehy '82

John P. Sheehy ’82 is president of John Sheehy & Associates, a consultant firm specializing in strategic planning and new business development for print and online publishers. His firm has consulted with such publishers as Dwell, Fast Company, Inc., Reader’s Digest, and AARP. It also facilitates executive retreats and management workshops.

John previously served as a publishing director for Time Inc. Ventures, was founding general manager of Health and Hippocrates magazines, publisher of Parabola magazine, chief operating officer of Weider Publishing, president of American Hospital Publishing, and president of Utne Reader.

A “come anyway” student at Reed with an entering verbal SAT score of 450, John graduated Phi Beta Kappa in English literature. He joined Reed’s alumni board in 1997 and served as its president in the 2001–02 fiscal year. Currently the volunteer director of the Reed Oral History Project, John has helped produce three themed alumni reunions on calligraphy, creative writing, and the humanities. John received the Babson Society Outstanding Volunteer Award and the Class of ’21 Award, and also contributes to Reed (in fact, he wrote the cover story for this issue). John’s wife, Laurie Szujewska, is an artist. They live on Sonoma Mountain outside of Penngrove, California, where John is a fourth-generation native.
