In memory of former faculty and staff members

Demorest Davenport, 1911-2004

Demorest Davenport, assistant professor of biology at Reed from 1938 to 1944, died on January 5. He received his Ph.D. in biology from Harvard in 1933. After graduation, he taught at Reed, where he met and married Winnifred Bailey, a dancer with the Portland City Ballet. During WWII, Davenport enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a decompression specialist. After the war, he taught at UC at Santa Barbara until his retirement. During his career there, he published widely, chaired the department for a number of years, and was awarded two Guggenheim Fellowships.

Elsie Goldhammer, 1916-2004

Elsie Goldhammer, secretary to the Reed president from 1954 to 1964, died on January 7. During her time at Reed, she served under acting president Frank Loxley Griffin and President Richard Sullivan. She was also a volunteer docent at the Portland Art Museum. Goldhammer attended Portland State College and the Portland Art Museum School. Daughter Joan Hart, son Hugh Goldhammer, sister Libby Solomon, and one grandchild survive her. End of Article
