Work is scheduled to begin in May on Reeds new
educational technology center, known as the ETC, near the east side of
the library. Con-struction on the 28,000 sq. ft. building, expected to
cost $7.5 million, should be completed by August 2002.
The ETC is the colleges third major investment
in academic facilities following the end of the Campaign for Reed College,
the other two being the renovation and expansion of the biology building
now under way and the scheduled expansion of the library. The ETC will
provide infrastructure that is critical for learning, providing appropriate
space for the use of technology in the curriculum and accommodating new
faculty members hired under the ten to one initiative. Specific plans
include increasing the seating capacity in information resource centers
(IRCs), adding computer classrooms, and providing comfortable lounges
for wireless computing. The floor plan will provide better support by
placing computing staff members in closer proximity to the IRCs and uniting
the staff, who now are in several campus locations, in one building. Faculty
members will benefit from enlargement of the faculty multimedia lab, which
allows Reed professors to test and learn about technologies for use in
the classroom. The plan is to incorporate flat-panel displays, high speed
wireless networking, video editing, voice recognition systems, and other
technological innovations in order to provide enhanced learning and research
opportunities for students and faculty.
