Orientation 2019

Parent & Family Orientation

If you have any other questions, please contact the Dean of Students at 503/777-7521.

What is Parent Orientation?

Parent & Family Orientation is a special program that runs concurrently with New Student Orientation. The program provides parents, family members, and new students with information about the many offices, services, and academic programs Reed has to offer. It is also a transition from high school to college.

Where do I register for Parent Orientation?

You can register online.

Where do I check in for Parent Orientation?

Check in at Kaul Auditorium. Check in is Monday, August 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Early check-in, for those with students attending trips, is Friday, August 23, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Where do I find the Orientation schedule?

The full schedule for both Parent and New Student Orientation is available online after May 1. Download our app to your mobile device or visit our online interface using your web browser. For more information, visit our schedule page.

What activities should I attend during Orientation?

Choose the sessions that look most interesting to you; the more sessions you attend, the more comfortable you will feel leaving your student at the conclusion of Parent & Family Orientation. Also, students are strongly encouraged to be at several key sessions during the week, as indicated in the Orientation schedule. Please encourage your student to attend as many sessions as possible—the more familiar students are with the campus and their classmates, the easier the transition from home to Reed will be.

What are Pre-Orientation Programs and Experiences?

Pre-orientation programs include International Student Orientation and the Peer Mentor Program. Both begin on Tuesday, August 20.

Pre-orientation experiences are four-day, small group experiences that take place the weekend before New Student Orientation. Students can participate in either SEEDS Community Engagement Experiences or Outdoor Experiences. Both begin on Friday, August 23. Students attending a pre-orientation program will be able to also attend an experience.

If my student goes on a pre-orientation experience, what do I do between Friday check-in and Monday?

Here are a few great options:

  • Accompany your student to check-in on Friday. Then spend time exploring all that Portland and Oregon have to offer. Beaches, mountains, the Columbia River Gorge, and the high desert are all about 90 minutes from town.
  • Send your student ahead. Meet up at Reed on Monday as the activities conclude and Parent & Family Orientation begins.
  • Accompany your student on Friday to check-in and then head home. We’ll miss you at Parent & Family Orientation!

May I drive up to the residence hall to unload?

You can drive up to Old Dorm Block, Anna Mann, and the Grove (Bidwell, Sitka, Sequoia, and Aspen) for short periods of unloading. The Grove can be accessed from 28th Avenue, next to the 28 West building. There is no direct access to the cross canyon residences; you must park in the north parking lot. Access to Foster-Scholz and MacNaughton is available from the west parking lot.

Where can I buy supplies for my student?

The Reed College Bookstore is your on-campus destination for books and supplies. The bookstore offers a preorder service for Hum 110 book bundles, mini fridges, and some other supplies you may want to have waiting for you when you arrive on campus. Book orders are due by June 30. We also work with Residence Hall Linens to offer a large selection of linens and other dorm items that can be shipped directly to campus for pickup when you arrive. Please place linen orders by July 20 to guarantee on-time delivery.

The bookstore will also have some supplies (including light bulbs, hangers, Reed blankets, and whiteboards) available for purchase when you arrive.

When does Parent Orientation conclude?

Parent Orientation officially concludes Tuesday, August 27, at 6 p.m., following the send-off reception. Please understand that your student will be highly scheduled over the next several days. Not only will they be at a number of Orientation sessions, but they will be working on making new friends.
