Giving to Reed benefiting from a national increase in college donations

Jan E. Kurtz, Reed's director of development was interviewed for the Chronicle of Higher Education story on this year's 8.2-percent increase in giving to colleges. Kurtz spoke about the bequest from Helen Stafford, a longtime biology professor who was one of the college's first female science professors. Professor Stafford, who died in August, made Reed the sole beneficiary of her will, leaving $8-million. Of that, $1-million will support the biology department, and the rest will go to financial aid.
