Community Engagement Experience Information

SEEDS (Students for Education, Equity, and Direct Service) will be offering a Community Engagement (CE) Orientation Experience for incoming first year students who are interested in service learning and community engagement. This year, the experiences will be held at the end of Orientation Week from Friday evening, August 26, 2022 to Sunday, August 28, 2022.

SEEDS is organizing multiple service learning projects within the Portland community on Saturday, August 27. We are working with our community partners to ensure each service project and host site will be following safety guidelines. We strive to provide an accessible and safe program for incoming first year students. In small groups, you will volunteer at local sites, getting to know Portland community members and one another by working together on meaningful projects. The SEEDS Orientation experience combines community engagement, volunteering, reflection, learning, and fun!

Program Overview

In small groups (6-12 Reedies each) led by two trip leaders (current students), participants will work with various community partners within the broader Portland community on one or two service learning projects. The goal is to build mutually beneficial relationships within the Portland community to foster sustainable and positive change.

Please note that the SEEDS Orientation Experiences run concurrently with the Outdoor Orientation Experiences. Therefore, you cannot do both SEEDS and Outdoor Orientation Experiences, you can only attend one.

Cost & Registration

The cost to participate covers meals, transportation, and all supplies associated with the community engagement activities. The SEEDS CE Orientation Experience will be offered at a sliding scale, determined by the participant’s financial aid package.

Registration opens on June 1 and closes July 15.

If you are a student in need of accommodations due to a disability, physical or otherwise, please let us know in advance so we can be as accommodating and inclusive as possible in our programming. You may also contact the Disability & Accessibility Resources office to discuss your needs and other possible accommodations for your time at Reed.
