Community Engagement Experience Information

Join other Reed students interested in community engagement for one of these exciting Orientation experiences. SEEDS (Students for Education, Equity, and Direct Service) builds mutually beneficial relationships within the Portland community to foster sustainable and positive change. SEEDS is committed to expanding the scope of the academic mission and supporting Reed students in developing tools for self-reflection and passion for lifelong community engagement. The SEEDS experiences combine community engagement, volunteering, reflection, learning, and fun.

In small groups (6-12 Reedies each) led by two trip leaders (current students), participants will work with various community partners within the Portland community on one or two service learning projects on August 29, 2020. The goal is to build mutually beneficial relationships within the Portland community to foster sustainable and positive change.

To prepare for the experience, each small group will meet sometime during Orientation week. During this meeting, you will have the opportunity to meet other Reed students interested in community engagement, begin to build community and a circle of friends, and learn how to participate in ethical, critical, and effective community engagement. On Saturday, August 29, SEEDS will provide transportation to the various Community Engagement sites for students to participate in a day-long experience, which will include meals, reflection, and community building.

Some of the organizations that you may work with include:

The trips take place after the conclusion of International Student Orientation and the Peer Mentor Program experience.
