Registration opens July 15

Community Engagement Experience Information

Join other Reed students interested in community engagement for one of these exciting Orientation experiences. SEEDS (Students for Education, Equity, and Direct Service) builds mutually beneficial relationships within the Portland community to foster sustainable and positive change. SEEDS is committed to enhancing the academic mission and supporting Reed students in developing tools for self-reflection and a passion for lifelong community engagement. The SEEDS Orientation experiences combine community engagement, volunteering, reflection, learning, and fun.

In small groups (6-15 first-year Reedies each) led by two trip leaders (current students), participants will work with various community organizations within the Portland community on one or two service learning projects on Saturday, August 28, 2021. The goal of community engagement is to build mutually beneficial relationships within the Portland community to foster sustainable and positive change.

To prepare for the experience, SEEDS trip leaders will host a pre-trip dinner during the week of Orientation. During this time, participants from each group will have an opportunity to meet each other over a meal, begin to build community and a circle of friends, and learn how to participate in ethical, critical, and effective community engagement. On Saturday, August 28, 2021, SEEDS will provide transportation to the various Community Engagement sites for students to participate in a day-long experience, which will include meals, reflection, and community building.

We are still establishing our community partner sites for 2021 and will update this website once we have confirmed the service learning projects. As an example, previous community partners have included:

Registration for the SEEDS Community Engagement Orientation experience opens on July 15. After you register, you will receive more information about our general trip guidelines, the experience schedule, and the projects you will be assisting with at our host sites.

Please note that the SEEDS Orientation Experiences run concurrently with the Outdoor Orientation Experiences. Therefore, you cannot do both SEEDS and Outdoor Orientation Experiences, you can only attend one.
