International Student Orientation

International Student Orientation is an essential part of the international student experience and is carefully designed to help launch you into a successful semester at Reed College.

International Student Orientation (ISO) will take place from August 19 to August 20 and is required for all F-1 and J-1 visa holders. The program orients international students to the United States and Reed and also connects each student with an InterConnect peer mentor who will guide students through their first semester. There is no registration fee for the International Student Orientation; all activities and meals are free for participants.

Please confirm your participation in International Student Orientation by completing the International Student Orientation registration form in IRIS, Reed's website for community members only.

If you have questions about International Student Orientation registration, contact Gwen Sandford, program director, at

More information for new international students and about international student orientation can be found on the international student services website.

InterConnect Mentor Program

An integral part of International Student Orientation, the InterConnect peer-mentoring program pairs each new student with an InterConnect group (4 to 6 new students) and a returning student mentor. InterConnect mentors contact their students over the summer and serve as a mentor and guide throughout Orientation and the first semester at Reed. During the fall semester, new students are supported through individual meetings and a series of fun InterConnect events with your mentor group.

The Host Family Program

Most international students are matched with a local host family prior to their arrival in the United States. The host family program allows for international students to connect with a family living near the college (the program is nonresidential, so you won’t be living with your host families). These families volunteer to be a friend to an international student at Reed and help introduce students to life beyond campus. Host families will correspond with their student during the summer and often arrange to provide transportation from the airport to campus. They are also a resource during the year in a number of ways: by showing you interesting sites in Portland and elsewhere in Oregon; by inviting you to their homes for an American meal or celebration; or simply by being an off-campus friend with whom you can talk. You will receive more information about the host family program over the summer.

Cost & Registration

There is no cost for International Student Orientation. All meals, workshops, and activities associated with International Student Orientation are covered by Reed. It is a good idea, however, to arrive with some US currency in order to purchase supplies and personal items. At this time, in order to reduce contact points, many stores in the city are requiring credit cards or mobile payments in transactions. If possible, please bring a bank card that will work in the US, check with your local bank before departure.

We ask that all international students register online for the International Student Orientation by June 15. Registration is important to help us pair students with mentors. You can register online through IRIS. If you have not received your IRIS login information, please email the Orientation office or call 503-777-7530.

You will not need any items for International Student Orientation that you would not already be bringing to campus. We understand that due to travel and financial restrictions, you may be traveling light. We will have linens (sheets, blanket, pillows, and towels) available for you upon arrival to use until you are able to purchase your own. For guidance on what to pack, please email international student services. You may also wish to order some items for delivery ahead of your arrival. Target, Amazon, and other US retailers offer competitive shipping rates. Contact contact mail services and bookstore directly for more information regarding your campus mail address and pick-up process.

Students will be brought back to Reed in stages beginning in mid-August to allow for COVID-19 testing. Information about dates will be sent to students and families in July. Students will be allowed to return only during their assigned dates.

If you are a student in need of accommodations due to disability, physical or otherwise, please let us know in advance so we can be as accommodating and inclusive as possible in our programming. You may also contact Disability & Accessibility Resources to discuss your needs and other possible accommodations for your time at Reed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move into the residence halls earlier than August 16? If I arrive earlier, where should I stay?

Unfortunately, Residence Life staff will not be ready to welcome you earlier than August 16 during your assigned move-in window. Some international students choose to arrive in Portland earlier than August 16 because they find a more convenient flight, want additional time in Portland, or other reasons. If you choose to arrive earlier, you will need to arrange your own accommodations until August 16.

ISS has secured special guaranteed rates for Reed students at two local hotels. Both hotels provide free 24 hour shuttle service from the Portland Int’l Airport.

  • Monarch Hotel and Conference Center ($89 Reed College nightly rate + taxes for single/double occupancy) Contact the hotel directly to book your stay and airport shuttle.
  • Radisson Hotel Portland Airport ($129 Reed College nightly rate + taxes. Includes breakfast.) Contact the hotel directly to book your stay and airport shuttle.
  • Please contact the ISS Program Director if you are an international student that needs financial support to cover accommodations between your arrival in Portland and your move-in appointment on campus.

Is there transportation support to Reed College from local hotels and transportation ports?

Yes! Reed Athletics, Fitness & Outdoor Programs (AFOP) will support students travelling to Reed from the Portland International Airport, bus and train stops, and local hotels.

To request a shuttle ride to campus, please email Cyrus Monsef at least 48 hours in advance of your shuttle needs. In your request, please include the following information:

  • Pick-up Location Address
    • For airline flights, include your flight carrier and flight number, arrival time/date, as well as whether you will clear customs in Portland or a previous city
    • For train or bus transportation, include the transportation company and number, and arrival time/date
  • Time and Date of your Reed move-in appointment
  • Your name and a contact phone number or email where you can be reached the day of your shuttle pick-up

If you will be staying at a hotel prior to your arrival at Reed, please utilize the hotel shuttle or a taxi to travel between the airport and your hotel.

What if my parents or family members are coming with me to Reed?

As many international students do not have family travel with them to the United States, we want to let you know that we do not have any formal activities that include parents and family members of international students. The activities outlined in the schedule are for international students only.

I’m not sure if I’m technically an international student. I am a United States citizen, but I have been living abroad. Am I able to participate in International Student Orientation?

Absolutely! We have a thriving Third Culture Kid (TCK) community at Reed and welcome TCKs to engage with our office. If you identify as a Third Culture Kid or have just been living abroad and would like to transition slowly back to the United States and meet other global nomads, you are more than welcome to attend International Student Orientation. Each year, we have several TCKs attend our orientation, and many TCKs continue to participate in our programs and services throughout their time at Reed. If you would like to speak with a TCK at Reed, let International Student Services know.
