Supplemental Orientation Experiences
We are currently tracking state guidance on COVID-19 safety measures and assessing the possibilities of offering these supplemental experiences.
Students can connect to the greater Portland community, learn more about Reed, and build lasting relationships with classmates through an outdoor experience or SEEDS (Students for Education, Equity, and Direct Service) experience.
Orientation experiences are optional, but we recommend them. Students join their classmates in small groups to participate in an experience that aims to help ease their transition to college life and enrich Orientation by providing opportunities for both personal growth and leadership development.
All Orientation programs and trips require pre-registration, and they fill up fast.
Outdoor Experiences bring small groups of students to wilderness areas within a couple of hours of Portland. Teams of student leaders or outdoor professionals lead the trips; all are trained in outdoor leadership, first aid, and CPR.
If you register for an Outdoor Experience, you cannot attend the SEEDS Community Engagement Experience.
Reed College reserves the right to alter or cancel trips based on conditions or situations outside the control of the college. These conditions include but are not limited to low registration, wildfire risk, and low water conditions. If Reed offers an alternative trip, participants will be contacted to opt-in to the new activity. If Reed must cancel a trip in its entirety, the college will notify participants and student accounts will not be charged.

The SEEDS Community Engagement experiences are volunteer opportunities in the greater Portland community for incoming students. Participating in the SEEDS Community Engagement experience is a powerful way to start the school year and begin to understand the Portland community. The SEEDS experiences combine community engagement, volunteering, reflection, learning, and fun!
