Michael Powers joined the German Department at Reed in 2017. He received his Ph.D. in German Studies from Brown University in 2015, and his B.A. in German Language and Literature from New College of Florida. Before coming to Reed, he taught for two years at Tufts University. His research and teaching interests include media and visual studies, critical and literary theory, and modern German literature and culture. His articles, translations, and book reviews have appeared in journals such as MLN
, The German Quarterly
, and Symplokē
. He is currently preparing a book-length manuscript entitled Clouds: Walter Benjamin and the Rhetoric of the Image
. He is the recipient of fellowships by the Fulbright Program and the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), and has also been recognized for his teaching. He was presented with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching at Brown University, and he received nominations for “Best Course” at Tufts University.
