Spill Response

Though infrequent, accidental releases of materials (including oil and gasoline) pose a danger to the Reed College campus and surrounding environment. Timely response to these events is required to mitigate damages, coordinate adequate clean-up efforts, and to notify appropriate outside groups.

Discovery of a Spill

All spills should be reported to Community Safety via the non-emergency phone number (503-517-5355). Describe the location, nature (material and source), and approximate volume of the spill. Move a safe distance away from the spill before callling, but if able please remain nearby to help direct Community Safety Officers to the spill and to provide additional information.

Location of Spill Kits

Spill kits are maintained throughout campus to provide resources in the event of an accidental oil or gasoline release. Oil spill materials are hydrophobic (do not absorb water) and are therefore inappropriate for use containing certain chemicals spills. Universal spill kits contain both hydrophobic and universal spill materials which can be used in any situation. Oil (hydrophobic) materials are WHITE and universal materials are GRAY.

Location of Drain Mats

Drain mats are used to cover storm water drains. If spill socks, pads, or absorbents are not enough to contain the spill a mat can ensure that oil does not contaminate storm water systems. Mats are housed in Yellow Tubes that are approximately 3 feet long.
