Disability Grievance Procedure for Students
In the event a student believes that the procedures described on the Disability Support Services website have not been properly followed or feels that any action has been directed against them because of a disability or perception of a disability, the student may (1) attempt to resolve the matter informally or (2) immediately file a formal grievance. At their discretion, the student may opt to skip the informal process altogether, or to discontinue such a process to initiate the formal grievance process at any time.
To resolve the matter informally, the student should first meet with the Director of Disability Support Services (Theresa Lowrie, firstname.lastname@example.org) or the Associate Dean of Students (Julie Maxfield, email@example.com), as appropriate, to explore the possibility of resolving the issue. If the student has concerns about meeting with either of those people, they may meet with the Dean of Students (Bruce Smith, firstname.lastname@example.org) or the Dean of the Faculty (Nigel Nicholson, email@example.com), and that Dean will try to facilitate resolution of the matter.
If the student chooses to file a formal grievance, the following steps should be followed:
For Complaints Against Faculty, Staff or Other Employees of Reed College
1. The student shall file a formal grievance in writing no later than 10 days after the end of the semester during which the incident in question is alleged to have occurred. The written complaint shall be submitted to either the Dean for Institutional Diversity (Mary James, firstname.lastname@example.org) or the Vice President for Student Services (Mike Brody, email@example.com), per the student’s preference. The written complaint must contain the name and contact information of the person filing it and a brief description of the grievance, including any alleged of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 or other appropriate law or College policy.
2. The official to whom the complaint is submitted shall convene a Committee within two weeks of receiving the complaint, unless prohibited by unusual circumstances. The Committee shall typically be made up of three college administrators, such as the Director of the Health and Counseling Center, the Dean for Institutional Diversity, and the Deputy Title IX Coordinator, or any other administrative, faculty or staff member, as designated by the Dean for Institutional Diversity or the VP for Student Services.
3. The Committee may consider verbal and/or written testimony from the student and the relevant faculty or staff member(s) involved, as well as, at the Committee’s discretion, other people who may have relevant information. The student may also ask for testimony from any faculty or staff member whom they deem may have relevant information to the complaint. The Committee at its discretion may take that testimony in person or in writing. The Committee shall strive to complete its review within ten working days of convening, absent extenuating circumstances.
4. After hearing testimony and/or reviewing pertinent documents, the committee shall report its conclusions in writing to the complainant and all other relevant parties within ten working days of reaching its conclusions. The decision of the Committee is final.
For Student Complaints Against Students/Peers
If a student believes that they are a victim of discrimination or harassment by another student because of a disability or perceived disability, they may initiate the honor process according to Reed’s established procedures, described on the Honor Process website. The Honor Process includes both formal as well as informal resolution mechanisms. If the student seeks additional guidance about the process, they may contact the Dean for Institutional Diversity, and for confidential support, they may contact the Health and Counseling Center.
