Confidentiality and Obligatory Reporting
The Dean of Students’ Office and many of the departments in Student Services are not confidential resources. Information shared with the Dean of Students’ Office or Student Services is treated with utmost sensitivity and only shared with appropriate offices on a need-to-know basis.
Students who would like to speak with a confidential resource may be referred to Health and Counseling Services or, in situations of sexual assault or harassment, a SAPR Peer Advocate. See below for more information about confidential resources and reporting options.
If a student is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, or the college cannot confirm the safety of a student, emergency contacts may be contacted by a dean in Student Services. Students are encouraged to keep their emergency contact information current in IRIS.
In all other cases, the college will not contact parents/family members or provide information about the student’s whereabouts, academic progress, use of campus services, honor principle violations or interactions with college staff without the student’s explicit permission. If a student would like to grant their parent access to specific information, the student should begin by contacting the Dean of Students’ Office.

Health and Counseling Services
Students who would like to discuss their situation with a confidential resource may be referred to Health and Counseling Services. Confidentiality is an issue that the counseling and medical staff at the Health and Counseling Center take very seriously. The Health and Counseling Center, the ethical principles of counseling and medical professionals, and Oregon law are all in agreement about the importance of the confidential interactions between a student and their health provider. Professionals working in Reed’s Health and Counseling Center will never release student information to a parent, professor, or third party without explicit written consent from the student or in the case of an extreme emergency. Obligatory Title IX Reporting
The college has moral and legal responsibilities to follow up on all disclosures of sexual and relationship violence. Reports of violations of the Discriminatory Harassment and Sexual Misconduct policy (DHSM) or Title IX are not accusations, but requests for investigation and assistance.
Reed encourages all community members to consider reporting sexual harassment, assault, relationship violence, and stalking. All reports will be investigated. There are anonymous, confidential, and non-confidential ways to report.
Any community member may report concerns, but certain employees must report possible violations of the DHSM or Title IX:
- Members of the faculty
- Vice Presidents & the President
- Supervisors of Reed staff
- Employees of student services, except student employees
- House Advisors
Obligatory reporters cannot keep the information they are given confidential, even if the survivor asks them to do so. Reports are to be made by telephone call or email to the Title IX Coordinator (or designee), or to Community Safety within 24 hours.
