Community Safety

Division of Student Life

September 21, 2020

Dear faculty, staff, and students:

We are writing today to inform you that the Emergency Response Team (ERT) is standing down. Portland has had three consecutive days of improved conditions. We urge everyone to continue to monitor air quality before they go outside, as some wildfires continue to burn in the region and air quality can still fluctuate to the level where it is unhealthy for people who are sensitive to the effects of wildfire smoke.

If the need arises, indoor space has been reserved for all tented classes. Faculty members will communicate any change of location.

While the ERT is standing down, Reed’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team will continue to monitor the wildfires and smoke conditions. Please direct any questions regarding air quality to EHS@reed.edu.

We wish to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your flexibility, as we curtailed campus operations and moved classes online. Most of all, thank you for taking such good care of each other last week. It was a week none of us will soon forget.

Be well and be safe,

Gary Granger
Director of Community Safety
On behalf of the Emergency Response Team
