Information: Class of 2022

Commencement Ceremony

We are planning a live, in-person ceremony for graduates and their guests for Monday, May 16, 2022, at 11 a.m. There is no limit to the number of guests. Due to COVID-19, commencement planning is subject to change, and plans may have to be revised at any time. Please check this site often for updates and contact the Conference and Events Planning office if you have questions.

Commencement at Reed College

Reed confers graduates with their actual diplomas at commencement. All requirements (college, departmental, divisional, and P.E.) must be met in order for a student to participate in the commencement ceremony. Exceptions are very rarely made.

If a senior does not meet all of these requirements by the Friday before commencement, that student will not be eligible to participate in commencement unless a petition to do so has been approved. However, students who miss the deadline will be eligible to participate in the next year's ceremony after completing all requirements.

The college holds one commencement ceremony per year. Spring-Fall graduates are invited to return to campus in May to participate in commencement.

COVID-19 Protocol

Guidelines for graduates: Current protocols for managing COVID-19 will apply to this event. Those who test positive will need to remain in isolation for at least five days prior to rejoining regular campus activities. Students who test positive must be cleared to leave isolation by the Health & Counseling Center (HCC) prior to attending commencement; those still in isolation will not be able to attend. If you are in isolation for the commencement rehearsal, you may still attend commencement if you are cleared by HCC to do so. For those who miss commencement due to COVID-19 infection, we will work to create an alternative occasion for you to receive your diploma.

All participants and on-campus visitors (including children 5+) must be prepared to provide proof of vaccination (or a negative result from a COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours) to attend. All commencement attendees will be required to follow the regulations set in Reed College’s COVID-19 Response and Action Plan

To keep our community safe and healthy, we request all participants and guests wear face coverings, both indoors and under the ceremony tent.

Due to COVID-19, commencement planning is subject to change, and plans may shift at any time.

Special Access Needs

Reed's commencement ceremony will take place outside under a tent. For accessibility, there is a paved sidewalk and temporary flooring for the aisles. Please contact the conference and events planning office if you need any type of accommodation or if you have specific questions. The ceremony will have ASL interpreters.

All orders include a cap and tassel, which are the student's own to keep. The robe is returned after the ceremony. MALS degree graduates receive the degree hood at the commencement ceremony, which is the student's own to keep. Caps are one-size-fits-all. Gowns are generically sized, additional options are available in plus size, please contact conference & events planning for more information.
