I study Latin literature of the early imperial period. My interests lie in Latin epic poetry and questions of genre and intertextuality, as well as in representations of trauma and survival in ancient literature, particularly the literature produced in the aftermath of the Roman civil war of 69 CE. Past and current research projects focus on Vergil’s use of allusion to the tragic figure Ajax in the Aeneid, on the figure of Oedipus in Statius’ Thebaid, and on survivors in the Thebaid, examining the epic’s preoccupation with survivors and survival in the context of larger discourses in Flavian literature about the traumas of civil war. Before coming to Reed in 2020, I taught at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota, from 2018-2020 and was Resident Instructor at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (the “Centro”) in Rome in 2015-2016.
