Watson (Thomas J Watson) Fellowship

Project Description

"Keeping Traditions Afloat: Ships and Sailors on the High Seas" focused on sailing traditions aboard tall ships. I visited England, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Portugal, Canary Islands, Barbados, Antigua, Virgin Gorda, St. Lucia, Dominca, Australia and New Zealand aboard 9 different square-riggers.

Value of the Experience

The value I got from the Watson experience began even before the application was due. It forced me to focus my ideas on what I was truly passionate about and what I wanted to do after Reed (with or without the Watson Fellowship). During my fellowship I learned how to advocate for myself and share my ideas with a larger community. Since then, I've continually drawn on the self-reliance, flexibility, and resourcefulness that I developed during that year.

What I Do Now

Currently I work with the Oregon Maritime Museum in Portland, Oregon developing their education program.
