Job Shadow Fund: Spring/Summer 2020

Due to the Oregon State Executive Order on COVID-19 restrictions, we are closing the Job Shadow fund at this point in time. We will, of course, update the fund should there be any change in circumstances. —CLBR

Current students are eligible to apply for up to $600 to support job shadow opportunities this spring and summer. Job shadows are a chance to observe and follow Reed alumni, parents, and anyone you want to ask for a short period of time (often two to ten days), to allow you to explore what happens in a field in which you have interest. These funds can pay for travel, housing, food, clothing, and associated expenses. Here's a five step guide to help you create a shadow experience.

For students with significant financial need, you may apply for an additional $200 to support your job shadow. This additional funding is to ensure equitable access to opportunities. Students must be able to articulate their financial need in their application.

You may apply to the Career Advancement Fund in addition to this application for up to $500 in additional funding. If you wish to do so, please say so in your application and address it in your budget.

Please note:

  • If you utilize all $500 from the CAF you will not be able to apply for additional CAF funding during the 2019-20 school year.
  • All funds requested from the Job Shadow Fund (up to a maximum of $1,300 if the financial need addition and the CAF are used) must be itemized in your budget, and funds may only be requested to pay for travel, housing, food, clothing, and associated expenses for your job shadow.

Extended Application Deadline

Applications will be considered on a rolling weekly basis until Sunday, May 31st at 11:59pm, or until funds are exhausted, whichever comes first. Applications must be received in Handshake by Sunday night at midnight for the application to be considered at the next CLBR committee meeting (that Monday or Tuesday). Funding for awarded applications can sometimes be received by Wed or Fri that week, but often not till the following Wed, so please plan ahead.

Currently enrolled students are eligible to apply.

Applicants may receive up to $600 from the Job Shadow Fund.

Applicants with significant financial need may apply for an additional $200 from the Job Shadow Fund. These applicants may also apply for funding from the Career Advancement Fund (CAF) of up to $500 to additionally support their job shadow experience. Maximum funding for applicants who demonstrate significant financial need is up to $1,300 in combined funding from the Job Shadow Fund and the CAF. All requested funding will be drawn first from the Job Shadow Fund, and second from the CAF, in these instances.

Funding requests will be reviewed and, if approved, may be fully or partially fulfilled depending on strength of application materials, availability of funds, and, if applicable, the applicant’s financial need.

All approved funding requests will be paid in advance through the Reed College Business Office.

Expenses generally will not be reimbursed after the fact.

  • Any amount used from the CAF will count toward your yearly maximum of $500 that you can apply for from the CAF.
  • All funds requested from the Job Shadow Fund (up to a maximum of $1,300 if the financial need addition and the CAF are used) must be itemized in your budget, and funds may only be requested to pay for travel, housing, food, clothing, and associated expenses for your job shadow.

Application Process and Materials

The Job Shadow Fund is a grant application in which you must specifically address the prompts provided. The more clearly you explain how this funding will support your future career pursuits, the better. Please provide context for your request, bearing in mind that the readers may not know how your request fits into your larger career goals.

Apply via Job Shadow Fund in Handshake with three documents:

  • A one-page resume
  • As an Other Document, please upload a confirmation from the person providing the job shadow. This would most likely be an image of a confirmation letter/email.
  • A cover letter that responds to an essay prompt (250 words maximum). Be thorough and detailed in the words allotted; we need a thoughtful response to the prompt in order to consider your request. The prompt:
    • How will this funding help you achieve your professional goals? Please be explicit about how this activity is related to career exploration or development.
    • In your cover letter document, please also include an itemized budget detailing how you will spend the funds and any relevant documentation supporting the request. Be sure to include a total in your budget request, and indicate how any expenses in excess of your requested funds will be covered.

If you have significant financial need, and wish to apply for up to an extra $200, please also include a response to this prompt in your cover letter (250 words maximum):

  • Describe your financial circumstances, particularly as related to the resources available to fund the shadow for which you are requesting funds. Within this response, please indicate whether you receive financial aid from the college.
  • If you wish to also be considered for funds from the Career Advancement Fund, please state so here. There’s no need to submit a separate application.

Budget Guidance

  • If requesting a meal allowance while traveling, CLBR recommends a maximum of $30 per day.
  • If your request includes travel, please include a budget line for transportation, which may cover commuting costs, airport transfer, and plane/train/bus tickets.
  • Use of public transportation rather than taxis or rideshare services is highly recommended.
  • Make certain that all expenses are included in your budget.
