This event is a combination of pre-arranged small group conversations between students and employers and an open networking follow up opportunity
- Employers host 25 minute small group sessions for up to three students in four sessions
- Students may choose up to three employers and CLBR will make the matches
To participate, students are required to:
- Attend one of two prep sessions held in Prexy before the event. You will choose your session during the registration process. If you are unable to make any of the three sessions, please describe your situation and the Center for Life Beyond Reed will follow up with you to make other arrangements
- Upload a current resume. A member of the CLBR staff will contact you before the event to provide feedback and give you an opportunity to make edits before your resume is shared with employers

Kat: In 1994, Reed found an internship for me in Intel’s device physics lab studying transistor reliability. I’m grateful, and enjoy paying it forward. These days I work with teams developing technology for automobiles, drones, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. In mergers & acquisitions, I help Intel choose wisely and create value rapidly. Over the years I’ve explored and learned from many disciplines in both technical and management roles. I would encourage Reedies to retain their curiosity, creativity, critical thinking and sense of wonder throughout their careers.
Ella: Graduated from Reed 2016 with interdisciplinary Russian-Art major. Past professional experience includes graphic design, interior design, business operations, and managing the Reed College Student Print Shoppe. I've been at Intel two years and I’m approaching my one-year anniversary as the Global Health & Wellness Coordinator overseeing global gym, café, and wellness programs.
Kat: A chance to return the favor to connect students to intern or full time positions. Reedies thrive here. Intel invents at the boundaries of technology to make amazing experiences possible for business and society. What future do you want to create?
Ella: I can advise about Intel internships, nontechnical roles (specifically site services), leveraging an unconventional major in a seemingly unrelated role, and integrating into this company’s culture as a recent college graduate.

Safety and Employment Coordinator
Recognizing the only way to stop a robot apocalypse is by creating and fostering healthy communities where people cultivate clear boundaries, are empowered to care for themselves, and contribute to helping one another, Ian has spent the last 13 years working with youth and Janus Youth Programs to establish safe spaces for young men and women to blossom into productive members of society.
He looks forward to putting himself out of a job as youth are given the tools to not repeat mistakes from their past and embrace the future. A non-robotic overlord future. Currently, Ian does this by developing the robust safety program that already exists at Janus because each of us only realize our full potential by developing the skills and safe practices to meet adversity. He also helps Janus Youth Programs find people who like to help youth, their families, and the community.
We are seeking employees who are passionate about providing opportunities and skill building to help at-risk youth transform their lives. Janus celebrates diversity and values the contributions made by every staff to help the children, youth, and families we serve. All positions involve working with strong, supportive teams to guide youth’s journey to a new life.
Across the agency we look for individuals who are excited to contribute to the community. Future employees will demonstrate that interest through education and/or previous/current work or volunteer experience with children and adolescents. Courses of study that focus on counseling, psychology, sociology, social work, and human services would be immediate pluses. Including examples of boundary setting, de-escalation, group management, and clear calm communication when expounding on job duties/descriptions or volunteering coupled with basic attentiveness to formatting and grammar all contribute to an attractive resume.
For many of our positions, there are contractual requirements stating a degree is necessary. Some may require an education related to our field. Many of our programs do appreciate a diversity in experiences so any degree may be acceptable for non-clinical staff. However, those who may not have relevant degrees/education then highlighting experience working or volunteering with children and adolescents is an immediate draw and in some cases may be considered in lieu of education. Illustrating experience working with youth can be a boon when included in a cover letter and/or resume. The combination of both education and experience is often a requirement for our full time positions.

Chris Hagerbaumer '87
Chris Hagerbaumer is deputy director at Oregon Environmental Council where she provides leadership, support, and coordination to OEC’s professional program staff. Chris joined OEC in 1996 to lead the organization’s program to curb pollution from cars and trucks and became Deputy Director in 2006. Chris has a background in environmental policy, advocacy and education, including work with the Environmental Law and Policy Center in Chicago and the U.S. Peace Corps. She has a master's degree in public policy from the University of Chicago and an undergraduate degree in German from Reed College.
OEC internships are for motivated individuals with an interest in environmental policy and typically involve research, outreach and/or administrative support. OEC's mission to advance innovative, collaborative and equitable solutions to Oregon’s environmental challenges for today and future generations. Our areas of focus include climate protection, clean and plentiful water, and toxic-free environments. Persephone Farm, founded by Reed alum Jeff Falen '80, is a 20 acre organic vegetable farm located near Lebanon, Oregon, about an hour and a half south and a tick east of Portland. Persephone has been in business for 33 years, and over those years as farms around the country have come to rely more and more on petroleum based plastics for season extension and weed control, Persephone has stayed in the soil. There is no plastic used for season extension at Persephone and the farm is still able to grow and market produce year round. While the amount of food coming from the farm feeds many mouths a year, there is plenty more work to do to make our local food sources more sustainable.

Recreation Leader – Citywide Recreation Team
Currently, I engage in community outreach and recruitment for seasonal and part-timerecreation support staff and support all programming an initiatives for the Citywide RecreationTeam at Portland Parks & Recreation.
The mission of Portland Parks & Recreation is to help Portlanders play and learn - providing the safe places, facilities, and programs which promote physical, mental, and social activity. We provide recreation and community engagement opportunities for all Portland residents. As we do this, there will be an increase in the wellness of our residents and the livability of our city. We accomplish this through:
- Establishing, safeguarding and restoring the parks, natural areas, public places, and urban forest of the city, ensuring that these are accessible to all;
- Developing and maintaining excellent facilities and places for public recreation and community building;
- Providing dynamic recreation programs and services that promote health and well-being for all;
- Partnering with the community we serve.
Parks & Rec seeks people who are energetic, interested in serving the community, helping maintain and enhance both the parks and natural areas and citizens' experience thereof. Mele Sax-Barnett is Senior Manager of Customer Engineering. Her team tackles complex bug reports and maintains several open-source libraries that our customers use to utilize UA's API endpoints, among other duties. She's also a Reed graduate -- '05 in Philosophy.

Sherilyn Holcome Waxler '97

I graduated from Reed in 1997 (Sociology) and from University of Washington School of Law in 2002. I opened my own practice, Waxler Immigration Law LLC, in 2009. I practice all areas of family immigration law, but specialize in assisting survivors of crime and domestic violence.
Our office has previously hired Reedies for various positions, including file clerk positions for students, and office assistant and legal assistant positions for soon to be and recent graduates. Our office seeks to hire thoughtful, caring individuals committed to making a difference. Ability to work independently and attention to detail are essential. Ideal candidates are bilingual in Spanish/English.
