Materials and Structure
This project is an introduction to the formal visual language and the Bauhaus concept of “form and function” of materials. In-class discussion of formal principles and the physical dynamic of forms will demonstrate sculptural issues. Reading from Josef Albers will outline formal issues such as tension and compression, symmetry and asymmetry. The Bauhaus focus on economy of form, the use of industrial “flat“ materials created at the turn of the century such as paper, steel, cloth, plywood and Plexiglas and the contrast with the natural materials will be focused on. One structure will be hand built from scrap wood using a Japanese saw, mat knife, carving tools, and other hand tools. Techniques using non-adhesive joinery will be employed.
