Dear Reed family,
This past Sunday I had the wonderful honor of speaking with many of you seniors who are participating in a special rite of passage. This journey is one that you may have dreamed about for some time. I, along with you, am disappointed that this important time has been marred by the onset of unprecedented global turmoil. I want to assure you that brighter days are ahead. I sincerely believe your college years will be filled with joy, inspiration, and growth.
I recognize that as you are making your choice about college, there is uncertainty about whether or not classes at Reed (or anywhere, for that matter) will be held in-person or online this fall.
Let me state clearly: at Reed, we believe in liberal arts education, and we know that the interaction between and among students can be as important as your experience with faculty. Having dedicated the past three decades of my life to liberal arts education, I can say that ours is a model based on close connections, relationships, and a great deal of care for one another.
It is my fervent hope that I will greet you on campus in the fall. As we have already done this year, we will continue to operate within the constraints of federal and state guidelines while adhering to our values and principles. We are committed to preserving the integrity of our outstanding academic program while keeping our community safe.
Milyon and the admission and financial aid team are poised to work with you and your family to develop a path that works best for you and ensure that you are able to make an informed decision. Reed is different—we are personal and committed to supporting your decision-making process. Please be in touch with your admission counselor with any questions.
Many of you will use this weekend to solidify your plans for next year. If you are still undecided next week, I hope you will join me for a casual virtual conversation on Thursday, April 30, just ahead of the May 1 National Reply Date.
I am delighted that you are thinking about joining us here at Reed. I wish you the best in your decision and look forward to seeing you in the fall.
All my best,
