Montana State Parks
Montana State Parks is pleased to announce that we are recruiting for individuals to serve at five different anthropologically significant State Parks, four of which are National Historic Landmarks that begin in April. We would appreciate your help in spreading these opportunities to among your students and colleagues at Reed College.
Students and alumni enrolled in Reed College’s Department of Anthropology may be very interested in this wonderful opportunity to apply their anthropological background while gaining experience and training in the fields of outdoor recreation, parks management, interpretive services, education, community outreach, and volunteer management. This opportunity will take place amid the natural wonders and rich cultural heritage of Montana State Parks and these members will complete projects that have lasting impacts which benefit both the parks and the communities where they exist. Whether they are teaching kids about nature or history, or organizing a group of volunteers for a tree planting project; our members lead the way in our communities by exhibiting stewardship principles and a strong conservation ethic through hands on engagement.
Montana State Parks is home to seven National Historic Land Marks, and our AmeriCorps program is looking to place national service members at four of those, and all of these sites have shaped the American West. Traveler’s Rest State Park is the only archeologically verified stop of Lewis and Clark on their journey to and from the west coast. The Giant Spring was recorded by Lewis and Clark in their journals and retells their journey along the Missouri River. The headwaters of the Missouri river has served as a major travel corridor for people since time immemorial, and the Madison Buffalo Jump was used by tribes as a major source of food collection prior to the introduction of horses or rifles to the American West. Pictograph Cave contains over 30,000 prehistoric artifacts and over 100 pictographs from as far back as 2,000 years. The Battle of Rosebud was the precursor to the Battle of Little Big Horn, and it too contains a buffalo jump, pictographs, and petroglyphs.
These sites need to have their story told to the public, and who better than an Anthropologist?
