An established poet selected each year judges the Mary Barnard Academy of American Poets Prize Contest at Reed College. This year’s judge is Samia Rahimtoola. Rahimtoola (Reed ‘02, herself a recipient of the Reed Academy of American Poets Prize in ‘01 and ‘02) is a poet and a critic who writes about contemporary poetry. She now teaches in the English Department at Bowdoin College. Her poetry has appeared in journals such as Foo, Hubbub, and The Brooklyn Rail. She is currently working on a book-length poem titled Revelation Desert Flow.

Mary Barnard (1909-2001), a Reed graduate (class of 1932), was a renowned poet and writer, and a translator of classical literature, including the following fragment from Sappho:

"Although they are
only breath, words
which I command
are immortal."
