Campus Announcements

Smoking policy update

As we announced in an email to the Reed community back in September, the Oregon Legislature passed a bill amending the state's smoking law. The new law went into effect on January 1, 2018. The relevant change for us on campus is that individuals must now be at least 21 years of age in order to legally purchase or possess tobacco products. The law also compels Oregon schools to create a written policy for implementing the new provisions.

During the fall semester, the students, staff and faculty who comprise Reed's Legislation Committee discussed our options and determined that it would not be necessary to change the college's Smoking Policy at this time, because the policy contains a provision to always comply with relevant laws. The committee will revisit the policy this semester, and those interested in proposing changes will have an opportunity to do so through the college's legislative process.

In the meantime, please visit the implementation plan summary, which will also be open for discussion in the spring, as well as a list of resources for smoking cessation.

Wishing you good health in the coming year,

—Mike
