The Classics Department is proud to host the inaugural Rumpakis/Dussin Lecture: "Grasping Beauty: Pleasure, Cognition, and the Ancient Viewer" by Professor Anastasia-Erasmia Peponi of Stanford University.

Greek and Greco-Roman cultures abounded in spectacles of all kinds. This talk will explore some important aspects of the experience of viewing in antiquity as described in both poetry and prose. There will be a special focus on the ways in which viewers perceived, interpreted, and enjoyed the spectacle of the human or divine body in such influential visual arts as dance and painting.

The lecture is open to the public.
