Pop-Up Gallery Talk with Prof. Kris Cohen & Eli Coplan '15

Friday, November 7, 6:45 PM
Portland Art Museum
This event is open only to current Reed students, faculty, and staff.

Kris Cohen, assistant professor of art history & humanities, and Eli Coplan ’15, Ruby-Lankford grant recipients will present “The Canvas and the Screen: Morris Louis’ Alpha Iota (1960)” at the Portland Art Museum on Friday, November 7 at 6:45 p.m.

What does post-war abstract painting have to do with the history of personal computers? When should painting be considered a new media form? What is the relationship between an Apple or Microsoft graphical user interface and the wide open expanse of a Morris Louis Unfurled painting? On the occasion of the Portland Art Museum’s temporary exhibition of Morris Louis’ Alpha Iota (1960) in the Clement Greenberg Collection galleries, this 45-minute interactive presentation will address these questions and situate Louis’ work both within the history of art and the history of the modern computer interface.

Part of PAM's “$5 Friday-night Series.” Stay to explore the galleries and maybe have a beer or play a game! Admission is just $5.
