Documentaries about protest and violence in Ukraine

Wednesdays
November 5, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Vollum Lecture Hall
This event is open to the public.

The Departments of Sociology, Political Science, and Russian invite you to a screening and discussion of documentary shorts by Babylon '13 - Cinema of Civil Protest on Wednesday, November 5, 6-8 p.m. in Vollum Lecture Hall (pizza will be provided on a first come, first-served basis).

Babylon '13 is a Ukrainian film collective that has been chronicling Ukrainians' experiences of protest, war and invasion over the last year. The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Yuri Gruzinov, a member of Babylon '13 who, while shooting footage, was shot by government troops and kidnapped and tortured by rebels. Selections of the film collective's work are available at http://babylon13.com.

The documentaries begins a year ago, when student activists rose up against Ukraine's authoritarian government, triggering a protest movement called the Euromaidan. They follow activists calling for greater integration with the European Union and rebels fighting for the return of the country's ex president and for closer ties to Russia, as they face off in a year-long struggle that has left thousands dead.
