Student engagement office

Student Center

The student engagement office coordinates a number of services and programs including orientation, the Gray Fund, Reed Leadership Academy, Reed Arts Week, student organization and senate advising, event registration, and ticket subsidies (including free Kaul event tickets).

The student engagement staff supports students in developing leadership skills; gaining experience in planning and implementing cultural, social, and intellectual programs; and exploring the range of options available for becoming involved in cultural, political, and social life at Reed. The staff works closely with student organizations by helping with budget preparation, contracts, communications, general organization, and event planning. Students are invited to stop by any time to get information, have questions answered, or obtain creative assistance with their ideas.

Gray Fund
In 1991 the late Betty Gray, a longtime friend of the college, endowed a fund, the stated purpose of which was "to assure that Reed College will have stimulating cultural, social, and recreational programs of excellent quality on a regular and planned basis that will interest students, faculty, and staff members and involve these three groups together in activities outside the classroom that complement the college's academic program."

On-campus events have included lectures, concerts, and the annual Harvest Ball Halloween dance. Local cultural excursions have included exhibitions at the Portland Art Museum, First Thursday tours, a classical Chinese garden trip, and a trip to the Experience Music Project in Seattle. Recreational trips have included sea kayaking, a wildflower hike, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The Gray Fund committee plans events throughout the year and encourages input from the community. To share ideas for trips and events, please call extension 6692. All Gray Fund events are substance and smoke free.

Event registration
The student engagement staff can help you with all aspects of event planning. Events in most campus spaces must be registered in student activities to confirm your space reservation and set up needs. To register an event, log in to IRIS and click the Student Events link. Please visit the student engagement office for more information.
