Rachel Gowland

Life beyond Reed

Rachel graduated from the University of Oregon in 2015 B.A. in Geography and a minor in Political Science. Before finding her way to Reed as the Assistant Director of Alumni Programs and Annual Fund, Rachel worked on political campaigns across the country and spent time as staff in the Oregon Legislature. In her free time, Rachel enjoys consulting with local campaigns, antiquing on the Oregon Coast, and watching the Oregon Duck Women’s Basketball team.

Academic interests

Rachel enjoys a broad scope of academic interests and is happy when exploring political science, art, law, history, literature, economics, and film. Her biggest passion is geography. Rachel is particularly curious about the influence of place on modern political patterns in rural America, which she hopes to explore.

Why MALS?

“I left my undergraduate degree feeling incomplete—there were so many subjects that I still wanted to engage with. The interdisciplinary nature of the MALS program gives me the opportunity to do that while focusing on my biggest passion, the intersection of geography and American politics. I love how Reed prioritizes in-depth research, writing, and critical thinking, which are skills I look forward to continuing to develop. I’m also deeply inspired by my classmates, who bring unique perspectives and expertise to every discussion.”
