Course Description: Full course for one semester. An introduction to the concepts and processes of studio art through drawing and other media. We will explore traditional and non-traditional approaches used by artists to serve their conceptual strategies.

Materials:
18x24 Newsprint:
Start with one 100 sheet pad. Cheap! Most cost effective. Great for making quick studies with dry media. Because of the residual acids left from the manufacture, newsprints become brittle and yellow with age and exposure to light.
18x24 Strathmore drawing pad / White drawing paper (70 or 80 lb):
Start with one 25-30 pad.
Compressed charcoal
Square sticks. (If you like, you could also purchase charcoal pencils in addition to the square sticks. Pencils come in hard, medium, and soft).
Vine charcoal and/or Willow charcoal
Carbonized dried plant vines and willow tree branches.
White compressed charcoal (or white conte crayons)
Graphite stick
square sticks
Drawing Pencil
Couple (eg. 8B, 7B, 6B, 4B, 2B, HB)
Hardest: 9H 8H 7H 6H 5H 4H 3H 2H H F HB B 2B 3B 4B 5B 6B 7B 8B 9B : Softest
Pencil Sharpener
Drawing room has one. If you want to work outside/home, nice to have. Make sure your pencil (or if you have charcoal pencils) fits.
Pink pearl eraser
Kneaded eraser
Chamois
Soft leather cloth, pronounced "shammy". Used to wipe away sections of drawings or as a blending device.
Black India ink
Small jar. Would be convenient if you could directly dip your brush/crow-quil pens in jar.
Small bamboo brush / Sumi ink brush
Should be cheap. (Or get cheap ones).
approx. 1 inch wide brush (bristle brush)
Find something really cheap.
Drawing (Crow-quil) pen (aka Speedball pens) + couple of different nibs for drawing/cartooning.
Looks like a fountain pen. Get a holder and nibs that go with it. You'll most likely find a package for drawing from Speedball. You could also get technical pens (eg. STAEDLER pigment liner: they look like regular pens and not fountain pens).
Drawing pad clips / Metal bull clips
Portolio
Reddish accordion or rigid black cardboard styles
Charcoal fixative / Workable Fixative
Comes in a spray can. Fixes charcoal on to paper.
Scissors, Utility knife, X-acto knife.
Rulers
Disposable camera (or just film if you already have a camera).
Ideally two or more rolls/disposable cameras (but one may do). I'll have you go to the nearest drug-store/photo-store to have them processed and printed ($7 or $8 per roll?).
Sources for supply:
Evaluation: Come to class. Participate. Work in class. Work out of class. Make alot of work. Do your assignments and exercises. Be responsible. Hand in assignments on time....Experiment. Thoughtful work is good. Craft is also important.

Portfolio review & Critiques: Keep all your work. I will have you hand in your portolio during the semester. We'll also have critiques during class.
