Front (East) Frieze Details

Mask on frieze of central structure, near left end; broken snout in center, below nose is the top of the mouth with teeth, above the nose a small scroll, on both sides eyes with inscribed pupils, eyelids and brows above, suborbital plates below, on far sides square ear ornaments with scrolls above and below (cf. 1917 print at left).

Mask on frieze of north wing, at extreme right; each rectangular mask formed of stones, each carved to represent a facial feature, then fit together as a mosaic on the facade.

1999. Throne and serpent head podium in photo at right; the serpent faces left, the jaws are decorated with raised dots and open to a full 180 degree angle, fangs along the upper edge, recessed eye in center, nose with scrolls at left, two scroll ornaments hang from jaw at right.

Tall feathered headdress of figure (missing) in center of frieze of north wing; circular holes indicate where cascade of feathers was originally tenoned; the throne and open mouthed serpent head both survive.
