This area in front of Eliot Hall includes the college's only yellowwood, which is considered a rare tree in Portland. And, just a few steps away from that, you'll find Reed's only bur oak.
The most interesting tree, perhaps, is the Norway maple beside the sculpture. The tree was hit by a car when it was younger and the injury split the bark and allowed the interior of the trunk to rot. But the tree continues to grow despite being mostly hollow and having a scar that spirals around the trunk.
