This native broadleaf evergreen sheds its leaves and bark bit by bit but blooms profusely in early spring and is covered with red fruit in the fall. Throughout the year its peeling trunk is a beautiful color and texture. Its habitat ranges from British Columbia to California. The bark of the Madrone makes an excellent tea when boiled, a favorite of knowledgeable backpackers. Maps: not currently found on campus
