Praxis: Media for Social Justice

PRAXIS is a weekly newsletter to provide information about the meetings, events, and activities of the groups, organizations, and individuals partaking in social justice issues. Information about such activities and organizations is always welcome, and so are articles, comments, opinion column, comic strips, and other creations in social justice field. The Praxis Management Board oversees and edits the submissions and prepare the weekly publications. We would like to be a media outlet for different kinds of voices, and we publish your contributions as it is as long as it has potential offense to other parties.

RC-PSY

RC-PSY (Reed College Psychedelia, Symbology and Yurts) is dedicated to two goals. First, we will build and maintain a large collection of student-created blacklight-reactive art via collaborative painting parties open to everybody. We had one towards the end of last year, and so we already have a small collection. This art will be lent to anybody and everybody who wants to use it as decor for shows, events, dance parties, etc... We have already had one client: remember the cool stuff on the walls and dome in Black Lodge? That was us! Our second goal is much cooler and much more ambitious. We've got this guy who has a yurt. Yurts are cool. This one needs some fixing up. Anyway, our end goal is to cover the interior of the yurt in this blacklight art, and throw dance parties in a beautiful colorful student-made ambiance. We are passionate about psychedelic art, and we want you to make some!

RIFT - Reed Intersectional Forum Theatre

At RIFT, we blow shit up. We explode received notions of hierarchy through disruptive street performance. We aim to misbehave. We want to decolonize your mind of the contagions of sexism, racism, transmisogyny, and ableism. We're here to give voice to the myriad stories of marginalized peoples at Reed. We're laying the groundwork for a new discourse, embracing the full breadth of human experience, to counter the lies espoused by the racist, capitalist patriarchy. We want YOU - the People of Color, the Queers, the disenfranchized - to join us. We want anyone who has ever dreamed of something better. Top 6 us if you want radical speakers on campus, guerrilla art installations around Portland, and tickets to workshops on Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed. Together, we will rehearse for the revolution.

Reed Film Forum

An effort to bring great films to Reedies outside of (and in cooperation with) the language houses, with time for post-viewing discussions and the occasional speaker. The goal here is not only to immerse ourselves in the great films of many different directors, but also to learn to take that journey with fellow Reedies by offering an outlet for constructive discussion and idea exchanging. Optimally our budget and other resources will support us getting a good amount of speakers. Early ideas for directors whose films we will be showing include Andrei Tarkovsky, Ingmar Bergman, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Terrence Mallick, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and many others (constructive film/director suggestions are welcome if they are at least somewhat researched [i.e., with information on who owns the public performance rights, if anyone, etc.]).
