| Fungus Among Us - Breaking the Mold | The Fungus Among Us - Breaking the Mold
Mushrooms have much in common with the word f***. First of all, they're multipurpose. F*** is a noun, a verb, an interjection, an adverb, the list goes on. I challenge you to make it an onomatopoeia, for IQ points. Mushrooms help plants grow, can be used as insecticides, help cure breast cancer, are really tasty, can make you see red people pole dancing on fractals behind your eyelids, were the first living things over 3 feet tall, etcetera. F*** and mushrooms are both fun, fulfilling parts of a good life. Through Reed's mycology club, you can have at least one of the two.
You may be wondering exactly how mycology will enrich your life. Our largest effort to date is our annual pilgrimage to the Yachats Mushroom Festival during the last weekend of fall break. This festival gives the attendee first hand experience at growing, hunting, identifying, and cooking mushrooms. It also involves camping at the coast. Highlights from last year include a spontaneous naked modern dance performance on the beach (performer 1, audience 2), participation in the drinking game that was the keynote speech, and the discovery of new passion for mushrooms and all their glory.
Last year, the Fungus Among Us also showed a lovely film, narrated in patriarchal British drone and almost exclusively time lapse video with a Star Trek soundtrack. Heaven. We also cooked using lobster mushrooms harvested near Mount Hood, chanterelles found in forest park, and criminis harvested at Trader Joe's. We taught a Paideia class as well, introducing cultivation, identification, and weird facts. Mushrooms allegedly have 36,000 sexes.
The future looksâ a helluvalot like the past, as far as the Fungus Among Us goes. However, we aspire to improve our organization and to plan activities less sporadically. Wink. Last year we sporulated and found our potential, this year we grow. We will descend on forest park like a hive of wasps who's nest has been disturbed and are blinded by rage and fear, minds unwavering from their single duty: protect the queen. I mean, hunt mushrooms.

| G.R.A.F. (Guild of Reedies Attempting Facepaint) | Once upon a Renn Fayre, a lone Reedie brought a diminutive tray of facepaint to the Quad. She began painting upon her fellow students--unbeknownst to her, the masses were gathering to join the facepainting frenzy. She and her friends banded together, painting the faces (and bodies) of friends and strangers alike. And thus, the Guild was formed.
Looking to its future, G.R.A.F. aspires to provide the Reed community with readily available facepaint and painters primarily for spontaneous occasions when the Guild deems facepainting necessary (i.e., midterms and finals). Additionally, the Guild will supply paint festivity for such events as Renn Fayre, fire shows, carnivals, student events, etc. Should one aspire to learn or practice the art of face and body painting, the Guild accepts apprentices (e.g., anyone who wants to join) and masters alike. more info |

| KayamBooch | Free kombucha for the masses! more info |
| Kenjutsu Club | Kenjutsu (sword techniques) represents a particular vein of the traditional swordsmanship of feudal Japan. Unlike sport Kendo or modern Iaido, which focus either or scoring points against an opponent or on florid solo forms, Kenjutsu remains grounded in the practical use of the sword as a cutting instrument. Through practice with the sword singly and with others, we strengthen body and mind through movement and the symbolic cutting away of our own weaknesses.
We use our funding to buy targets for practice and demonstration cutting. more info |
| La Maison Francaise | The French House is the central hub for both French language and culture on campus. While most events are geared toward developing--or developed--francophone students, we host several large events each year for the whole student body to enjoy. | Men's Rugby | Rugby is a long standing Reed institution responsible for numerous bloody noses and stumbling freshmen. We tend to run around and touch each other on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6 pm, and have games on Saturdays with socials afterwards. If any of that sounds interesting come out and give us a shot. We don't care how small you are or how little athletic experience you have, we just really like rugby and think you will too.

| Motorized Couch Collective | We put wheels and motors on couches for your rolling comfort. more info |
| Native American Students at Reed (NASAR) | Portland has the 9th largest Native population in the United States. Reed's peer institutions all have some kind of student-run group for Native students that provides the larger collegiate community with an avenue to respectfully explore and celebrate Native culture. We are proposing that Reed supports the creation of a Native student group, the first of its kind in the history of Reed that will be open to all students, faculty, and staff.
A staff advisor from the Office for Institutional Diversity (Caitlin Bergeon) has volunteered to oversee and help support the organization's events and membership as it aligns with the office's mission. more info |

| Paideia | Any Reed student or alum has a wealth of knowledge to share. However, they tend to be too busy acquiring new knowledge to spread around what they already have. This sorry state of affairs is remedied during winter break, before the classes start again. Dorms are open, and students congregate in classrooms and lecture halls to explore curiosities that have yet to blossom into fascinations. In 2012, we look to elaborate on the more than 50 year tradition of Paideia. Look for class applications and schedule announcements before Thanksgiving Break. more info |
