Men's Ultimate Frisbee Team
Coach: Shane Rubenfeld
You can see it on many an afternoon in the upper fields—men and women suspended horizontally over the grass, their hands thrust into the air as a disc sails toward them before they fall to earth. This is Ultimate, and the players at Reed love the strategy, the aerobatics, and the grace of the game as much as they do the mud that assails them for much of the season. Reed has two club teams, a men’s and a women’s, and a physical education course that offers a comprehensive introduction to the sport. The men’s team—the Berserk—was established in 1996 and the women’s team—Booty—was founded in 2001.
Ultimate combines the nonstop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football. Played by two seven-player squads with a plastic disc on a field, the object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone. Players transition swiftly and with grace from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, an out-of-bounds pass, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds. Created by New Jersey high school students at the height of the 1970s, Ultimate retains its counter-cultural roots and is still governed by Spirit of the Game, a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the players rather than referees. In addition to the excitement the game itself creates, players are attracted to Ultimate due to the strong, colorful, and supportive culture that surrounds it. Ultimate combines the values of fair play, self-control, and athletic endeavor to create one beautiful game.
Ultimate PE Class
The Ultimate Frisbee PE Class is a comprehensive introduction to the sport. In the first and third quarters of the school year the course commences with beginning level instruction on the basic skills and strategy necessary to the sport. In the second and fourth quarters the course covers intermediate to advanced skill sets as well as more advanced strategy. The PE course times coincide with the Ultimate club teams’ practices, thus combining varied levels of experience and opportunity for further play and inter-collegiate competition. We welcome anyone interested in the sport of Ultimate to come try it out—no experience necessary!
