John Ferguson
John began kayaking in Arkansas in 1975. "I think I was the third
person in the entire state to own a kayak," he says. "Everyone else
was using canoes. So a few friends and I got a book titled 'How to
Kayak' and taught ourselves in the school of hard knocks." Within a
couple of years, kayaking was getting popular in Arkansas but there
were no instructors, so John began teaching classes. "In the land
of the blind, the one eyed man is king," he quipped. He has been
teaching ever since. He has notched over 800 days on the river. "If
I had to choose the best ten days of my life, I'm sure at least
five of them would be days where I was kayaking."
John has a geotechnical engineering consulting business as his
"other reality job." His most memorable project was working on Mt.
St. Helens after the volcano erupted to help prevent future
mudslides and floods from occurring. Currently he is working on his
first novel - an epic adventure set in the not too distant future.
He lives in the woods with his wife, Chris and a house full of
animals.
