Sharon Blaney has been head coach at Reed College since 2012. Blaney is also currently a guest coach with Rugby Oregon’s youth program as well as an assistant coach for the high school girl’s all-star team, the Red Hawks. In 2012 Blaney was an assistant coach for the U23 Pacific Coast Collegiate Women’s all-star team, the Grizzlies. Additionally, from 2009 to 2011, Blaney was the women’s rugby head coach at Bentley University in Waltham, MA where she led the team to a D3 national championship in 2010.
Blaney started playing Rugby in 2000 for Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, MA. From 2005-2011 Blaney played for Beantown Rugby club, during which she captained the team several times and filled multiple positions. From 2008 to 2011 she was part of the Northeast Senior Women’s all-star team and captained that team to a national championship in 2010. In 2008 Blaney was entered into the Women’s National team player pool. Since then she has played in two Women’s Rugby World Cups (2010 & 2014), and competed in 25 international matches for the Women’s US squad. Blaney currently plays in the Women’s Premier League for Oregon Sports Union and has since 2011. Most recently Blaney was named captain for the Pacific Northwest all-star team, the Loggers.
Aside from Rugby, Blaney is an avid explorer of the outdoors and is passionate about spending time and playing with her dog, Billie.
