2008-09 Registration Changes Coming Your Way!
Day One, Waitlist, and One PEr

Have you been capped out of a class after the first day of the semester? Did you try to log on to SOLAR last spring only to wait forever? Are you tired of submitting petitions to get in a capped class? Have you tried to add the only PE class you want to take only to find it full of students who are enrolled in multiple PE courses? On April 14, the faculty ratified a proposal approved by the SCAPP, the CAPP, and the administration committee to enhance registration. The changes are designed to allow students more equitable and efficient access to courses with less disruption once classes begin.

Day One: Register for only one course on the first day of registration

During the first day of registration students can register for one unit per semester - typically one course. Students are asked to evaluate their choices and choose the course that they most need or want. Starting the second day of registration, students can register for all their courses. This balances initial access to high-demand classes across all students.

Successfully adding the top class on Day One does not guarantee a student will remain enrolled if that course becomes overenrolled and priority criteria are applied at a later date. However, you are more likely to remain enrolled.

Waitlist

All conferences will have an enrollment limit of twenty-four students, unless faculty do not wish to set that low a limit, or have approval for a lower limit. If a course goes beyond the enrollment limit, a waitlist will be created in SOLAR. A student who tries to add a class after it is full will be offered the option of getting on the waitlist. Students will be on the list in order of registration.

When a seat opens in the class, the first student on the waitlist will be notified by email with a specified time to add the course. Until the end of finals, students will have 48 hours to add. During the summer, we'll extend that to 72 hours. Students who fail to add the course within the time allowed will be removed from the waitlist, and the next student on the list will be notified. Students can add themselves back on the waitlist if they wish.

Criteria in High-Demand Classes

Once a course has exceeded the enrollment limit, faculty may request approval to apply enrollment criteria. Enrollment criteria will be applied only once per course, and no later than August 8. These criteria (e.g. Day One enrollment, major, class standing) will be applied to registered and waitlisted students alike. Enrollment in the class and position on the waitlist will be adjusted to reflect the criteria. The waitlist process will then proceed as above. Students who are successfully enrolled in a course by the end of the preceding spring semester will not be removed from the class. If an instructor wishes to admit a student over the enrollment limit, s/he can record an override in IRIS.

One PEr: PE Registration

PE registration through SOLAR will be limited to one PE class per quarter. Because students can receive credit for only one PE class per quarter, limiting enrollment provides equitable access to PE to all students. Students who wish to register for more than one PE class in a quarter may do so during the first week of classes, using a drop/add form.
