It has been an honor to serve as reunion gift chair for my class this year. The work I’ve done for Reed’s Annual Fund really underscores what I’ve learned about the funding of higher education during the 10 years that I’ve worked at Utica College—a small, private college in upstate New York. I’ve seen firsthand how increasingly difficult it is for bright and deserving students to afford college, and how the shrinking pool of corporate and foundation dollars makes gifts from individuals all the more critical. At Reed, this is especially true of alumni donations. Alumni generosity plays a significant role in helping to cover the cost of educating each student. That generosity can also inspire today’s students to donate after they graduate, creating a close community of Reedies who care deeply about the college’s future.
Will Morgan ’88
As a transfer who spent only three years at Reed, I felt I didn’t contribute much to the community by way of student governance or helping to put on gatherings and such. For the last several years, I have been driving back and forth from Seattle to Reed to run sound at the alumni coffeehouse for Renn Fayre and to DJ or MC midnight theatre at reunions. I’ve also been to the coast to cook at Camp Westwind. As a not-so-gregarious person, I enjoy having a task to do and meeting people through the course of doing that task. I get to talk with Reedies and do my small part to help make the place as rich and diverse as it is, all whilst enjoying the beauty of campus and Portland in general.
