Being a Wiccan means not having to rely on a spiritual community, explains Britt Eira Long ’08. Though she is head of the Pagan Circle on campus for a third year, she doesn’t need to meet other witches or even leave her house to perform rituals. With tools as simple as sticks, feathers, candles, and statuettes, she has fashioned an altar in her bedroom.

Religion at Reed? No problem. Or at least, that’s what Lisa Moore thought when she arrived on campus three years ago to fill the new position of assistant dean of multicultural affairs. Moore, who came to Reed from Stanford, had expected to handle the usual diversity issues that come up at a liberal arts college: racial and sexual identity, minority recruitment, and the like.
