Flags Across the Lawn

Reed’s chapter of Students for a Democratic Society coordinated an installation of flags on the south lawn of Eliot Hall during March to protest the war in Iraq. A total of 115,000 two-foot-high flags were placed by students, faculty, staff, alumni, and neighbors over the course of a week—112,000 white flags, each representing six Iraqis reportedly killed since the war began (according to studies published in the Lancet), and 3,000 red flags representing U.S. military casualties. The flags had previously been at the University of Oregon, and moved on to Lewis & Clark College. Panorama photo by Andrew Wallace.
