The Reed community gathered on October 5 for one
of the most joyous occasions in the life of a college, the inauguration
of a president. Under a tent on the front lawn Diver was officially greeted
by chairman of the Reed board of trustees Daniel Greenberg ’62,
student senate president Chris Moses ’03, college controller Tracy
Frantel, dean of the faculty Peter Steinberger, president of the alumni
association Patrick Pruyne ’83, and Daniel O. Bernstine, president
of Portland State University. Portland Mayor Vera Katz sent a warm greeting
from the city to Diver, and the Reed chorus and Collegium Musicum, led
by Virginia Hancock ’62, provided ceremonial music. After a thoughtful
keynote address by Amherst president Tom Gerety, Diver was officially
invested as president and gave an address that will long be remembered
(see the president's address).
Then came the party in the Gray Campus Center, attended by throngs of
students, alumni, and members of the faculty and staff, as well as delegates
from 50 colleges and many friends of Reed. After a glorious meal featuring
foods of the Northwest, everyone—and most especially Colin S. Diver—danced
for hours and reveled in the happiness of this great occasion.
